Overview:

The Interconnection & PV/BESS Design Engineer supports utility-scale photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects from early development through EPC execution. This role serves as the developer’s technical representative through ~30% design and as an owner’s design steward thereafter, ensuring design intent, performance assumptions, and interconnection requirements are consistently carried forward into EPC-led detailed engineering.

Key Responsibilities:

Core Responsibilities & Accountability

  • Owns developer-level PV and BESS layouts, single-line diagrams, through all interconnection phases and 30% design.
  • Acts as the design authority for early-stage and pre-EPC design decisions; accountable for technical completeness and accuracy at handoff.
  • Represents owner design intent during EPC execution, ensuring performance, constructability, and interconnection assumptions are preserved.
  • Responsible for identifying design risks, performance impacts, and constructability issues and elevating them with clear recommendations.

Early Development & Interconnection

  • Develops preliminary PV and BESS site layouts and electrical single-line diagrams using PVCase and AutoCAD.
  • Integrates utility, land, environmental, and permitting constraints into early design packages.
  • Supports utility interconnection applications and studies by supplying layouts, system parameters, and modeling assumptions.
  • Coordinates with utilities, consultants, and internal stakeholders to align interconnection requirements with project design.

Performance Modeling & Technical Analysis

  • Builds and maintains SolarFarmer and/or PVsyst performance models through all design phases.
  • Establishes and documents modeling assumptions, including losses, degradation, clipping strategy, and curtailment considerations.
  • Supports Independent Engineer reviews by providing transparent, defensible modeling inputs and documentation.
  • Ensures performance assumptions align with long-term asset ownership and financing requirements.

Pre‑EPC Design Development (to ~30%)

  • Advances layouts and electrical design content to support EPC pricing, constructability review, and risk evaluation.
  • Ensures alignment between interconnection requirements and plant-level electrical design.
  • Documents design intent, constraints, and open items prior to EPC handoff.

EPC Transition & Design Oversight

  • Participates in EPC kickoff meetings as the owner’s design representative.
  • Communicates design assumptions, performance drivers, and constraints to EPC partners.
  • Reviews EPC-issued design packages (IFC and revisions) for conformance with approved layouts, performance assumptions, and interconnection commitments.

M&A Development and Oversight

  • Support M&A activities by performing technical due diligence to assess facility, site, and infrastructure viability, risks, and capital requirements.
  • Develop conceptual layouts and engineering models (up to ~30% design) for acquired or target assets to validate capacity, footprint, and redevelopment or expansion scenarios.
  • Conduct preliminary building, fire, zoning, and life‑safety code reviews; identify compliance gaps and develop code enforcement and mitigation strategies in coordination with AHJs.
  • Collaborate with corporate development, finance, and operations teams to translate technical findings into acquisition recommendations and post‑acquisition integration plans.

Cross‑Functional Coordination

  • Coordinates closely with Development, Origination, Finance, Construction, and Asset Management teams.
  • Translates technical design decisions into clear impacts for non‑engineering stakeholders.
  • Supports internal decision-making by providing clear technical recommendations and tradeoff analyses.

Role Leveling Notes

  • Operates as a hands-on individual contributor with defined ownership of developer-level design outputs.
  • Requires limited oversight for standard design tasks; escalates complex issues appropriately.
  • Does not serve as final stamping engineer or detailed EPC designer.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Experience with utility-scale solar PV and/or BESS projects.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and PVCase (layout and SLD).
  • Working knowledge of SolarFarmer and/or PVsyst.
  • Familiarity with utility interconnection processes and requirements.

Preferred:

  • Experience supporting interconnection applications and Independent Engineer reviews.
  • Understanding of EPC workflows and detailed engineering phases.

Benefits:

  • Medical, Dental and Vision Benefits, including generous company provided premium support
  • Paid Vacation Time – 3 weeks to start
  • Retirement savings plan

Compensation:

  • Salary Range: $110,000-$130,000 USD (adjusted for Canada)
  • Bonus: 15% of annual salary
