Overview:
The purpose of the Associate Interconnection Engineer role is to assist in the interconnection application process for all US projects. This is a highly collaborative role with a large focus on engagement across the organization and with utility providers to make applications; to progress each project forward within utility provider interconnection processes, with participation in scoping conferences, regular project status meetings, and review of deliverables provided to and received from utility providers, while monitoring critical milestones, and capturing action items; to preserve good standing in the queues, and up to commercial operation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support the interconnection process for all development projects in the United States.
- Analyze interconnection tariffs and policies to develop and refine our interconnection application strategy, in accordance with our overall development and EPC strategies. This involves reading tariffs and other literature and presenting proposed approaches to best position ourselves for future flexibility and expense timing. This involves communicating to the greater team the results of research and analyses.
- Contributes to technical analysis of network capacity leveraging available utility information from review of hosting capacity information, pre-application or screening results, to analysis using power system simulation software.
- Prepare and submit interconnection applications for acceptance into the queue process for different utilities and ISOs/RTOs. This includes working closely with the engineering team to prepare site plans and line diagrams for interconnection applications and design updates as required. Coordination with external consultants retained to prepare simulation models as required by utility processes.
- Liaise with utility representatives and coordinate the application process through the entire interconnection study process and on to commercial operations. This involves meeting regularly with utility representatives and internal leaders to advocate for timely work completion. This involves communicating to the greater team lessons learned from utility engagement.
- Coordinate the progression of interconnection studies, including checking in on the status of applications throughout the study process. This involves developing relationships with utility representatives to ensure good quality service from utilities.
- Receive interconnection agreements and update internal project management systems with key information such as payment amounts and schedules. Interface with financial processes to coordinate payment delivery.
- Performs technical review of utility study deliverables to ensure proper assumptions, criteria, methods, and results presentation; to understand accuracy and correctness of interconnection facility as well as network upgrade costs, and any related cost sharing, and contingent upgrades and to understand what options are provided, if any; and that the deliverables provide sufficient information to confidently inform decision-making.
- Communicate potential interconnection issues affecting the following aspects of project development to the following stakeholders: Project schedules and budgets Project Management, Design limitations - Design, Discovery of distribution or transmission constraints – GIS, Land constraints – Real Estate, Permits and additional research – Governance, and Overall project success – Manager of Interconnection.
- Coordinate with other members of the design and engineering to ensure the designs proposed to utilities are up to utility standards. The role involves regular communication with different team members, ensuring engagement at critical milestones throughout the interconnection process.
- Coordinate and liaise with the Design and Engineering team leaders to ensure knowledge is transferred appropriately. The role includes supporting other members of the interconnection team with critical decision-making and innovative thinking around business development and strategy as it relates to interconnection.
- Own the upkeep, organization and improvement of templates, standards and other tools.
Qualifications:
- 1+ years of professional experience involved in clean energy systems, specifically renewables and energy storage systems. Direct experience working for or with utilities is preferred.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, energy, or other related discipline is preferred.
- Knowledge and understanding of interconnection processes and policies is required.
- Knowledge of energy conversion, transmission and distribution planning, and proficiencies in power systems analysis using industry related tools. Such tools might include PSS/E, PSLF, PowerWorld, TARA, PSAT, Synergi, Aspen, CYME, DigSILENT, and OpenDSS. Proficiencies in related APIs involving Python preferred. Familiarity with fundamentals of electromagnetic transient analysis applications such as EMTP and PSCAD is a plus.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and organization skills are required.
- The ability to balance and prioritize seemingly competing priorities is required.
- Process-oriented thinking with proven experience in developing processes is required.
- Strong communication and organization skills are required.
- Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook is required.
- Experience working with utility portals such as PowerClerk is preferred.
- Experience with ISO NE, PJM, NYISO, ERCOT, and utilities in the Northeastern US is preferred.
Salary:
Annual Salary $50,000 - $70,000 USD
Bonus Opportunity: 15% of annual salary
